You know you're a pompous a-lister... (first in a series)

…when you link to another site and casually mention you “did this many years ago.”

Bonus Points if you “congratulate” the other site in any way:

“Here is a very interesting application. I did this many years ago. I’m glad to see this person is builiding on that work! Good Job!.”

Bonus Bonus Points if you assume the reader has been following your blog long enough to remember your previous iteration. Just in case, you should link to the old post anyway:

“Here is a very interesting application. As you remember, I did this many years ago. I’m glad to see this person is builiding on that work! Good Job!.”

Bonus Bonus Bonus Points if you didn’t actually DO something, but rather just talked about it…. slightly implying the person “took” your idea. If what you talked about is only marginally related, all the better:

“Here is a very interesting application. As you remember, I had a similar idea many years ago. I’m glad to see this person run with it! Good Job!.”

Bonus Bonus Bonus Bonus Points if you then proceed to crticize the work with undue harshness… if you reference how “long” you’ve been in the game, all the better:

“Here is a very interesting application. As you remember, I had a similar idea many years ago. I’m glad to see this person run with it, and it’s a good start. However, he has it all wrong. There are dozens of other applications I’ve seen that run into the exact same problem. He may as well wipe the slate clean and start over…. or close the doors and sell pencils. Good Job!.”

Penultimate Points if you do this:

“Yawn! Old, tired idea”

Updated 06.07.03 20:30 – Update: Quixado has an interesting taxonomy of bloggers. As you remember, I had some similar thoughts about this earlier today. I’m glad he ran with those ideas, and it’s a good start, but I’d like to see a graphical representation of the sociology. Good Job!
