SxSW: User Centered Design
Raw Notes from User Centered Design PanelUser-centered Design Panel
User-centered design focus on partnership with designer
focus on effects you will have on lives of people in their context
how is this thing going to work in the real world with real people?
Design for the Real World...papenak
As consumer products get more and more complex, then it is more difficult to plan for how objects are used in real world... focus was on building and creating revenue positive technology advancements!
Design has stayed in the design camps, only recently has it entered into the engineers/businesspersons mind
focusing on design can help with business decisions (can users)
Problems with user-centered design
perception is that it's dogmatic
perception is that it's EXPENSIVE
User centered design has started to evolve
Honest-to-god degrees
Extreme Programming and other alternative development
No longer about adding usability in a box
Is it expensive? Or timely?
(UCD is just about planning before you make it)
Yes, but it also means you avoid problems when you make mistakes
More expensive than what?
Just make it part of what you do... therefore, less expensive
Need to understand psychlgy of designers / designers are ambassadors
Create and Barrell small iterations
Technology is becoming more and more complex...
we need to consider humans as we make these things or else we won't be able to USE it
If you aren't careful, then improvements in technology could net to negative because people-centered design didn't come up with it
Sony doesn't do market research which is different than UCD because they invent new possibilities
What are good products from UCD? good research, better teams
